Style Safari: Embark on the Adventure of Discovering Your Personal Fashion Identity
An article all about how to find your own style.
Finding your personal style takes time and experimentation but know that there are ways to make it easier on yourself! Check out these steps to find your distinctive style.
Step #1: Self-Assess Yourself & Your Fashion
Reflect on who you are and what makes you feel confident and comfortable. What hobbies do you like and what activities do you participate in? Do these cause any limitations to what you would/can wear? Additionally, take note of the colors, styles, and fabrics that attract you and look good on you. This is a great starting point.
Step #2: Define Your Aesthetic
In other words, pick what theme sticks out to you. Do you like cottagecore or dark academia or a vintage classy look? Figure out what speaks to you.
If you’re having a hard time, ask your friends what they think or take this quiz.
Step #3: Create A Fashion Mood Board
Next, hop on Pinterest and start searching for pictures of clothing that fit that aesthetic! Pin them to a board and use that as a reference when you start to create outfits or when you go thrifting.
You can also do this on a tangible piece of paper. Try cutting out pictures from magazines that you like and gluing them on a single posterboard.
Step #4: Closet Evaluation
Once you’ve done that, go through your closet. What do you already own that falls into that aesthetic or that you love? Perhaps it’s a blazer, a mini skirt, or platform boots. Pull those items aside.
Also, evaluate which colors you own and what specific types of clothing you like. For example, maybe you love straight legged jeans, but you hate skinny jeans. Be aware of your likes and dislikes.
Step #5: Experiment With Clothing
Now that you’ve got some inspiration and gone through your closet, try to see what you can create out of the clothes you have! Don’t be afraid to try new color combos or aesthetics. And, if you’re still having a hard time, try something new each day or each week and see which one made you feel the most confident! For example, pick a theme such as the fashion seen in a certain TV show like Gilmore Girls, and then see if it works for you. This makes fashion feel like a fun little game.
At the end of the day, however, remember that confidence is key. If you don’t feel confident, then it won’t matter what you’re wearing, you still won’t feel good about your style. So, try to reflect on what makes you unique and then express that through your clothing!
