KEWLZ: Cedar City's Newest Thrift Store

Sick of the same old shops in Cedar? Check out KEWLZ.

There aren’t too many thrift stores in Cedar City, so when a new one pops up, everyone wants to check it out, me included.

I decided to stop by earlier this week to do just that, and to see where it ranks compared to the other second-hand spots in Cedar.

While it isn’t my favorite of the bunch, it does hold a certain charm that can’t be found at the bigger stores, such as the D.I.

Let’s break it down.

Store Information

Located off of Industrial Road in Cedar City, KEWLZ Family Thrift sits tucked in between a workout shop and a storage locker. It can be hard to spot initially, so just look at the cars out front and you'll see a truck with their logo printed on the side.

They opened about 5 months ago, making it the newest thrift store in town.

The owner, Jared Kidman, greets you as soon as you walk in the store. He told me that all of the items in his shop are either donated or from storage lockers he purchases.

Beyond Clothing

Not only do you see Jared when you first walk in, but you see all sorts of knick-knacks. There are hats that line the ceiling of the small room (one of which I actually purchased), rocks, class bottles, necklaces, postcards, and more.

It's exactly what you'd expect from a local consignment store.

Then, when you walk into the other room, you'll immediately notice giant shelves that line the center of the room. They're littered with home decor, kitchenware, homemade projects, fake plants, books, and DVDS.

It isn't organized which makes it hard to find certain pieces, and they're all a bit odd, but they're still fun to go through and you might find something you like.

Clothing Chaos

To the left of the shelves, you'll see two circular racks of pants and then a long rack of dresses, shirts, sweaters, and jackets behind them that runs the length of the room.

The clothes are organized by sizes, not by gender or article of clothing like most thrift stores.

This is nice because all of your options are in front of you and you don't have to move to a different section, but it can also be harder to find what you want or to determine if something will fit you.

For example, a customer in the store found a pair of shorts he liked, but he couldn't tell if they were women's or not. However, the owner gave him some useful advice to find out, telling him to check the pockets; if they were small, then they were women's.

The shoes are to the right around the back corner next to the ties, belts, scarves, and beanies. The shoes aren't organized by size, though, which can make it hard to find a pair that fits you.

Clothing Quality and Quantity

The store doesn't have that much clothing, so if you want to go on a crazy shopping spree, beware. It only took me about 10-15 minutes tops to see everything. However, it is a small store, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

When it comes to the clothing quality, I was also a bit disappointed. Most of the clothes I saw gave off 2010 vibes, with weird graphics or strange cuts and designs; they didn't feel vintage or unique.

Don't get me wrong, he definitely did have some name brands tucked in the racks, such as Calvin Klein, Nike, and Levi, but there weren't that many. It's really just hit or miss.

Thrift Store Review

Rate: 7/10

Overall, the owner is extremely nice and will come up and talk to you. He said he'll actually take requests, so if you tell him what you're looking for and he stumbles upon it the next week, he'll give you a call. I think this is a really great touch.

Plus, it's extremely cheap, great for families (hence the logo), and is extremely charming.

Although, it's not somewhere I'd regularly thrift at. The options are limited, and that the quality isn't consistent.

Go see for yourself!

They're open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM.
