Do You Have Everything You Need for St. Patrick's Day?
Updated: Mar 18
Feeling lucky? Stop by the thrift store.
St. Patrick's Day is just around the corner, and we want you to be prepared!
This holiday is a great opportunity to experiment with some DIY in order to spice up your wardrobe for the festivities. These require few materials and can be accomplished by beginners.
If DIY isn't your thing, I also have an example of what else you can wear to celebrate at the bottom of this blog.
Let's get into it!
A Classic White Tee
First thing's first: you need a white t-shirt. This is the base of your DIY so make sure it's comfortable and the right size you're looking for. If you get an oversized shirt, you can always crop it, so it fits better.
To find the perfect white tee, I recommend the women's section. It's too hard to find a plain t-shirt that doesn't have a logo or cringey saying in the men's section.
Meanwhile, the women's section will have plenty of options when it comes to material and length. You can find a basic tee, or you can choose a long sleeve or one with lace or a color, etc. It's up to you, but make sure it's plain.
You can also check the kid's section if you want a cropped baby tee.
Fabric, Fabric, Fabric
This is when you get to be fun with it and find all sorts of patterns and shades that call your name. You're going to want to look for clothes in greens or golds, even rainbow if that's what you want, so it's St. Patrick's Day themed.
You don't need to care about the actual shirt, you're just choosing it based off of the pattern or hue because we're going to be cutting it up. You can also go to the blankets/sheets section of the thrift store for more options.
Using fabric from other shirts for your DIY instead of going out and buying brand new fabric is a great way to sustainably shop.
Build Your Aesthetic
This is when your creativity gets to really flow.
Once you've selected and purchased your clothes, you're going to cut out shapes and letters to spell make something St. Patrick's Day themed.
For example, you can cut out letters to spell out "Lucky" or "Kiss me I'm Irish." You can alternate shirt patterns for each letter or each word. You can even cut out shapes, such as shamrocks, and make them various sizes to stand out and fill the white space.
Once you have them cut out, you need a sewing kit (just a needle, colored thread of your choosing, and pins will also work). You're going to pin the letters or shapes onto the white shirt where you want them and get to work!
It doesn't need to look perfect at all. In fact, making it look like a mismatched patchwork blanket is kind of the idea and is really trendy right now.
At the end, you should have something like this:
An Alternative Look
If this is too much work for you or you don't have enough time, you can use the same white t-shirt as a base and go buy some paint. Various greens and gold, as well as sparkles, will be key for this.
Once you have everything, you can draw some shamrocks onto it or write a cheeky saying on the back. I did this with my friends this year and it turned out so good!
We just popped on a movie and got to hang out and make matching shirts. It was a great way to spend time with my friends, and the shirts were a hit at the party!

An Easy and Reliable Look
If DIY just isn't for you, I challenge you to experiment with a green monochromatic look.
I truly believe that everyone looks good in green, plus it's just a fun way to stand out for the festivities. Mix and match patterns and textures to make it more interesting and dynamic. Don't be afraid to try something new.
Try this out for your St. Patrick's Day festivities! It's such a fun take on a holiday fit.
