Pick Your Favorite Track from "GUTS" and I’ll Tell You What to Thrift
Olivia Rodrigo’s worldwide tour starts next week, and if you’re attending one of her concerts like I am, then you probably need help deciding what to wear.
In order to help you guys find the perfect Olivia Rodrigo outfit, I’ve broken down her 12 new songs into 3 style categories.
Whichever category your favorite song from her album falls into, dictates what you should be on the lookout for during your next thrift store visit. It's that simple.
Let's dive into the 3 style categories:
1. Pop Rock Grunge
Songs: "all-american bitch," "bad idea right?," "ballad of a homeschooled girl," and "get him back!"
If you’re an avid Olivia Rodrigo listener, you know why these four songs are grouped into a category: all of them immediately have that punk rock angst to them. They’re heavy, loud, and have bitter and reckless feelings attached to them (in the best way possible, of course).
If one of these four songs is your favorite, you should thrift an updated grunge look. Plaid will be your best friend for accomplishing this. You can check the men’s section for a baggy fit, or you can check the skirts section for a plaid mini skirt that screams Olivia Rodrigo.
When topping off your outfit, make sure your shoes represent that “not messing around” feeling. Shoes such as platform boots will instantly elevate any outfit and make it feel edgy.
The key to this updated Olivia grunge look is layering and finding a balance between feminine and masculine. For example, pairing baggy jeans with a tighter fitting top or a mini dress with chunky black boots like she does in the picture below.
2. The Revenge Attire
Songs: "vampire," "logical," "love is embarrassing," and "the grudge"
The reason I grouped these 4 songs together is the fact that they’re all about reflecting on her previous relationships, repeatedly analyzing their complexities and the outcome. She reaches a post breakup conclusion in all of these songs that help her move forward and teach her about love.
Revenge attire fits this best because it's all about making statements after a breakup. It's an outfit that exudes a newfound confidence and understanding of oneself or a situation. A prime example is Princess Diana's revenge dress. It screams "glow up" and "you're missing out!"
So, if one of these four songs is your favorite, you should definitely thrift a little black dress. The lingerie section is a great place to check, especially if you want a more delicate material such as satin, and the dresses will almost always have lace or bows on them.
You can also achieve this look by thrifting something out of the ordinary/a statement piece. Something that would make people look twice, such as a long fur coat or a shirt with a loud print. Bold colors such as red is a must.
When worn with confidence, these articles of clothing make for the perfect revenge attire.
3. Cottagecore Meets the Coquette Aesthetic
Songs: "teenage dream," "pretty isn’t pretty," "making the bed," and "lacy"
The similarity between these 4 songs is that they’re all slower ballads with emotionally evocative language. They also focus less on boys and more on herself and her perceptions.
Because they’re slower songs and feel more personal, you should thrift something that feels comfortable and inviting.
So, when thrifting, look for light colored or floral fabrics, specifically in the form of dresses or skirts. The lingerie section is also a great place to check, similar to the revenge attire, because the clothing there is comfortable and has details such as lace and bows.
You can also check the back to see if they have packs of vintage lace that you can use to accessorize.
Additionally, I recommend checking the cardigans. You're almost certainly going to find one in baby blue or pink that you can throw on to keep yourself cozy.
The key to this style is the material and color. Make sure it's flowy and soft, even fuzzy, and in a warm and inviting shade. It's all about "embracing and indulging in all things romantic and beautiful."
At the end of the day, you'll probably just end up wearing Olivia Rodrigo merch to her concert, but you can still incorporate these styles in your day-to-day looks to exude her iconic fashion sense.
